Art Exhibition Showcases Student Work

A fascinating exhibition of work by Cumbernauld College's creative students is set to go on public display next week.

Taking place from Monday, June 3 to Friday, June 7, the annual Art and Design Exhibition will be held in the College Street of the Cumbernauld campus, as well as the chill out area at the East Dunbartonshire campus.

Both locations will be completely transformed to display the work of 56 talented students from NC Art and Design, Illustration for Graphic Novels and Tattooing, and Arts Club courses.

Steven Hart, lecturer at Cumbernauld College, said, "The exhibition gives the public a chance to see what the students have been working on during the past year.

"There will be an array of different work on show including drawings, paintings, illustrations, printmaking, fashion designs, graphic and advertising designs along with three dimensional structures.

"Not only is everyone welcome to attend the exhibition, but there will also be the opportunity to purchase these exclusive pieces of work from the artists.

"You never know, you could take home a piece of work by the next Andy Warhol or Frank Quitely!

"This is an event that staff and students always look forward to and it’s going to be another great exhibition."

The exhibition will feature some terrific pieces of art from students including Rachel Connal (thumbnail) and Kayleigh Gray (right).

If you want to come along, it is open Monday, June 3 to Friday, June 4, from 9am to 4pm. We look forward to seeing you there!

ScotHot

The culinary skills of our talented lecturer and student have been celebrated during a prestigious industry contest.

Catering lecturer Paul Clark came out top in the Gressingham Duck competition, while student Andrew Kelly, who is studying on the College’s Professional Diploma in Professional Cookery, City and Guilds Level 1 course, was awarded silver in the Modern Apprentice Skills Challenge during ScotHot – Scotland’s largest hospitality, tourism and catering show.

Paul wowed the judges with his seared duck breast, butternut cous cous and puree cardamom and orange reduction, winning ‘best in class.’ Andrew meanwhile performed well in his round, successfully preparing a chicken for sauté as well as producing six different vegetable cuts to a high standard.

Andrew, 17, from Kirkintilloch said: “I found the competition challenging but really enjoyable. You only get 40 minutes to prepare all parts of the dish which is a really tight timeframe. Taking part was a great experience and I was very pleased to have won silver.”

M A D I S O N - So Fresh, So Cool, So Talented

Two of the members of up and coming Cumbernauld band M A D I S O N, Russell Ferguson (lead vocals, guitar and piano) and Oliver Prinn (backing vocals and keyboard) came in for a chat on our Radio Active Scotland Unsigned Show with Joan Taylor.

Having been supporting the boys since the release of their first single, Armbands, I had since heard their new EP Cogs and Wheels and had been impressed by the diversity and maturity of the songs on the EP and their impressive way with a melody and lyrics.

The band is made up of:
  • Russell Ferguson (lead vocals, guitar and piano)
  • Oliver Prinn (backing vocals and keyboard)
  • Kier Palmer (guitar and backing vocals)
  • Callum Wilson – (drums)
The EP “Cogs and Wheels” is released to coincide with a gig the band are playing on Saturday 2nd February 2012 at the Forge Community Hall, Cumbernauld.

There are limited tickets left for this gig, and at only 3 quid a ticket, plus support from Craig Horne, it is sure to be a treat for local music lovers.

The band has had a lot of favourable press, with articles in national newspapers and Cumbernauld News. As the lads themselves say, “local is king”, so I'm glad I could get them on a show based in Cumbernauld that goes out to a worldwide audience!

Russell and Oliver were both great to interview, being very articulate, amusing and passionate about their music and helping to promote the local music scene in Cumbernauld as well. We were all in agreement about the need for people who live in the local area to promote it.

We had discussions on a range of topics, including the origin of the bands name (taken from a dance that was popular in the late 50s/early 60s called ‘The Madison’ which was featured in the musical ‘Hairspray’), and which the band members all had parts in whilst at school.

The guys are all aged between 18-20, but the songs on ‘Cogs & Wheels’ display a maturity and sensitivity which belies their youth, being a series of songs which detail the start of a relationship and its eventual breakdown.

Check out their Facebook page HERE, catch them at one of their gigs, and listen to the interview which will be broadcast again Friday 1st March 6-8 pm on www.radioactivescotland.com.

Fluorescent Hearts – Hot Hot Hot!

Hello all

Were you listening to my interview with Fluorescents Hearts lead singer Chris Ashton, on Radioactive? If not, you missed yourself.

This band is pretty cool with melodies that touch the very soul, and then slap it about a bit with their rocky edge. They have already played at sell out gigs with their large fan base. This was pretty evident when one tweet from him and my listening figures shot up! Chris spoke about at a recent gig in Perth the fans knew the words to all the songs and sang them back to him. Chris is a pretty cool guy and came across as quite humble.

The interview led to talk about their ‘Tell Her You Love Her’ song, which has been picked by Jim Gellatly for inclusion on Scottish Album of the Year 2012 and viewed by 11,096 on YouTube.

I strongly recommend that you guys try to see Fluorescent Hearts at King Tuts on the 9th January, tickets are selling really fast and you will know why if you listened to my interview!

Student's creativity on show for all to enjoy...

Just because you may not have chosen Art & Design as your course, or your day to day routine doesn't involve art, doesn't mean that you can't appreciate good Art when you see it. At Cumbernauld College, we're not short of talent when it comes to the creative studies.

So this June the College Street and Chill Out Area at the East Dunbartonshire Campus will be transformed into an exhibition space showcasing the up and coming artistic talent of the future, as the NC Art & Design graduates exhibit their work.

This is your chance to see the work of possibly the next Salvador Dali or Stefan Sagmeister on your own door step... Maybe you're friends with them already and you don't even know it.

Following the success of last year's exhibition, the bar is set especially high for the standard of quality this year.

Comments from last year’s exhibition include:

Last night we took a wee trip to Cumbernauld College to see what budding talent was on offer at their end of year show and we must say we it was well worth the journey.

Both the students and the tutors must be commended for achieving such a high standard of work

Each student exhibiting has demonstrated a great deal of skill and critical understanding far beyond their years

Please take the time to come along and view the exhibition:

School fundraiser makes more than £400 for Yorkhill !!

Kildrum Primary and Cumbernauld College present cheque to children’s hospital

Pupils from Kildrum Primary School, along with Cumbernauld College students, have handed over a cheque for £478.43 to Yorkhill’s Royal Hospital for Sick Children.

The money was raised during the school’s health week, which featured a Footsteps event, organised by Cumbernauld College’s HNC Events team. The unique Footsteps event gave pupils the chance to participate in two chosen sports, with training provided by students on the NC Sports Coaching course, under the supervision of their lecturer.

The schoolchildren also tried out fitness computer games and stopped by the healthy eating tasting station to try some snacks provided by Tesco Extra, Co-op and Eden Spring.
